"I have learned this at least, by my experiment: if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours."

- Henry David Thoreau

CAREER TRANSITION

One out of two working Americans is unhappy in their job. Work has become either dull, routine or unrewarding. Escaping this situation, however, is not easy. Change is difficult. Where does one start?

At Career Focus, a Job and Career Transition Coach (JCTC) will guide you through a 4-step process that identifies possible career paths. The first step involves using assessment instruments (three card sorts and a test) to select occupational interests, prioritize career values, identify transferable skills and determine work and management style. Using this data, you are then asked to select 6 possible career options. Then you must select the “best” option and explain why you chose it. Finally, an action plan is developed that identifies how you plan to reach your goals, when you plan to reach them and who needs to be involved.

The first assessment exercise involves identifying occupational interests. Do you prefer working with data, people or things? Do you have an interest in education, sales, communications, computers or construction? Do you enjoy work that is enterprising, investigative, artistic, or social? By using the 113 occupation sort cards, you will be able to answer some of these questions and determine which lines of work you are most interested in.
The second assessment exercise involves using 41 sort cards to prioritize those career values that affect your work environment. Is location important? How about prestige, money, level of responsibility, personal beliefs, time freedom and creative expression? The answers to these questions will determine your career satisfaction and success. Clarifying these issues will help you define what you need and want to thrive in a job.
In the third assessment exercise you will be using 56 sort cards to identify those functional-transferable skills that remain constant regardless of your work environment. Are you creative? How about a career in sales, advertising, music, writing or art. Skilled in communicating, then consider a career in teaching, public relations, marketing or politics. These motivational skills are your key to entering, redirecting, or changing careers.

The Personal Style Indicator (PSI) is the fourth assessment tool. It is a test to help identify “your basic personal style of responding to people and to tasks.” You will gain self-understanding and self-acceptance, and greater understanding and acceptance of others. How you see yourself “influences how you act in all areas of life.” Are you an action-oriented individual, or more analytical, expressive or harmonious? Your PSI will reflect the scores received in each of these 4 areas.

The career workshop is given in 2 two-hour sessions on separate days. The cost is $300.00.
